How to Secure a Small Business Network in Delhi
Most small businesses in Delhi do not have a dedicated IT security team. But that does not mean security is out of reach. A few practical steps — taken correctly — dramatically reduce the risk of data breaches, ransomware, and network intrusions.

Step 1: Separate your Wi-Fi networks
If your office Wi-Fi is one single network shared by employees, guests, and IoT devices (CCTV cameras, printers, smart TVs), you have a significant security risk. If a guest's infected phone connects to your Wi-Fi, it can potentially communicate with your business computers on the same network.
What to do:
• Create a separate guest Wi-Fi network (most modern routers support this)
• Put CCTV cameras and smart devices on a separate VLAN or network
• Your business computers and servers should be on a separate, password-protected network
Step 2: Use a proper firewall
A consumer router is not a firewall. It does basic NAT (Network Address Translation) but does not inspect traffic for threats or allow you to create proper access rules.
For a business network, use a dedicated firewall appliance or a business-grade router with firewall capabilities. Brands like Cisco Meraki, Fortinet, Sophos, or even pfSense (open source) provide genuine network-level protection.
Step 3: Update everything, always
Most successful cyber attacks exploit known vulnerabilities that already have patches available. The attackers simply rely on businesses not updating their systems.
Set Windows Update to automatic. Update your router firmware. Update your antivirus definitions. If you have a server, maintain a patch schedule.
Step 4: Strong passwords and multi-factor authentication
• Every user account should have a unique, strong password (12+ characters)
• Do not reuse passwords across systems
• Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) for email, cloud services, and remote access
• Change default passwords on all network equipment (routers, switches, cameras, printers)
• Disable the default admin account on routers where possible
Step 5: Reliable, tested backups

• Daily backup to a local device (external drive or NAS)

• Recognise phishing emails (check sender address, hover over links before clicking)
• Not plug in unknown USB drives
• Lock their screen when leaving their desk
• Report anything suspicious immediately rather than hoping it is nothing
Step 7: Control who has admin access
Not every employee needs administrator rights on their computer. Restricting admin rights means that if malware does get onto a system, it has less ability to spread or make system-wide changes.
Review user account permissions annually. Remove admin rights from accounts that do not need them.
