What Is IT AMC and What Does It Include?
AMC stands for Annual Maintenance Contract. An IT AMC is a service agreement between a business and an IT company where the IT company agrees to maintain and support the business's computers, servers, printers, and other equipment for a fixed annual fee.
Why do businesses sign IT AMC contracts?
Without an AMC, you pay for IT support only when something breaks. This is called "break-fix" support. The problem with break-fix is:
• When something breaks, you are under pressure. You may pay emergency rates.
• You do not know when the next failure will happen or how much it will cost.
• Small problems are often ignored until they become big (expensive) problems.
• Your IT vendor has no incentive to prevent problems — they earn more when things break.
An AMC flips this model. The IT company earns a fixed fee regardless of how many times they visit. They are now financially motivated to keep your systems running well and to fix small problems before they become large ones.
What a typical IT AMC covers
Quarterly preventive maintenance:
The engineer visits your office four times a year to inspect all equipment, clean systems, check cable connections, update software, and run diagnostics. Many problems are caught and fixed before they cause downtime.
Priority support response:
When something breaks, AMC clients jump to the front of the queue. A typical AMC agreement specifies response times — commonly 4–8 hours for critical faults, and same business day for non-critical issues.
Virus scanning and cleanup:
Regular scans and removal of malware, adware, and other threats.
Software updates and patch management:
Ensuring Windows, Office, and other software is up to date reduces the risk of security vulnerabilities.
Printer servicing:
Cleaning, calibration, and minor repairs included in the AMC. Major spare parts (drum units, fuser assemblies) may be extra depending on the contract level.
Network checks:
Speed testing, router/switch inspection, and cable testing during quarterly visits.
What an AMC does NOT always cover
Every AMC is different. Always check:
• Whether parts and consumables are included or charged separately
• Whether server work is included or only workstations
• What the response time guarantee is
• Whether there is a limit on the number of visits per year
• Whether CCTV and printers are included or separate
